Torpoint is a town in the far south east of Cornwall, on the Rame Peninsula. The town is separated from the city of Plymouth by the mouth of the River Tamar, a stretch of water known as the Hamoaze.
Torpoint has a population of around 9,000 people. It is an eighteenth century ‘planned town’ which was designed in a grid format by Reginald Pole Carew in 1774. Torpoint grew in size as workers began to settle from the Devonport Dockyard. The population was further boosted by the Royal Navy's main training facility, HMS Raleigh, which was established in the town.
Transport in Torpoint
Torpoint is linked to Plymouth and Devonport by a seven minute journey on the Torpoint Ferry. The three boats operating this service are pulled across the water on a system of chains, which are then lowered underwater to allow regular ferry access. A rail service also runs to Plymouth on the Exeter to Penzance line, and provides connections to London.
