Nine miles to the north east of Bury St. Edmunds, situated in north Suffolk, is the Roman village of Stanton. Said to mean ‘a home-stay on stony ground’, the village lies close to the former RAF Shepherds Grove, where American forces were once based, and is home to just under 3,000 people. One of the main landmarks in Stanton is the beautifully restored windmill at Upthorpe Farm, just east of the village.
The Cock Inn and The Rose & Crown are the village’s two local pubs. There are also two churches in Stanton, All Saints (Church of England), and a Methodist church. In addition, the disused church of St Johns holds occasional service.
