Monmouth is a town situated in the historic county of Monmouthshire in southeast Wales. More specifically Monmouth is located in Monmouthshire, a local authority covering a partially overlapping area which existed between 1974-1996 and continues in use as a preserved county.
Monmouth is located close to the Welsh border with England, where the River Monnow meets the River Wye. The medieval stone gated bridge at Monnow Bridge is unique in Britain as it is the only remaining preserved bridge of its kind. A second bridge over the Monnow was opened in 2004, allowing the old bridge to become pedestrianised. There is also a longer bridge over the River Wye.
Monmouth is twinned with two other European towns - Carbonne in France and Waldbronn in Germany.
