On the western edge of Dartmoor National Park, Horrabridge is a thriving village with a population that is now over 10,500 (according to Devon County Council statistics). Historically Horrabridge was one of Devon’s ancient mining villages, but it has now developed into a village with a rich community and a good selection of property types. It is a desirable choice with a range of homebuyers.

Horrabridge is just a stone’s throw away from the historic market town of Tavistock with its shops, schools and leisure facilities. It is also within easy reach of Plymouth and the picturesque South Devon coast.

Horrabridge has two churches, a number of homes offering bed and breakfast, a pre-school group, a couple of pubs, general shops and a post office. It has a village hall that can be hired for events and a new primary school that boasts excellent facilities.

The village is also famed for its Horrabridge Football Club that dates from the turn of the century.


History of Horrabridge

Horrabridge means "bridge on the boundary" and the village got its name as it ‘bridges’ the four parishes of Buckland Monachorum, Whitchurch, Sampford Spiney and Walkhampton. Other villages in close proximity include Crapstone, Grenofen, Magpie, Meavy and Yelverton.

Located within the West Devon local authority area, Horrabridge is twinned with Tilly-Sur-Seulles in France.


Transport

Just four miles south of Tavistock and 12 miles north of the city of Plymouth, it sits on the River Walkham within Dartmoor National Park. Its ideal location makes it a popular starting point for walks on Dartmoor.

A regular bus service runs to and from Tavistock and Plymouth. Alternatively, both are a short car journey away.


Education in Horrabridge

With a large number of families with children, Horrabridge offers both primary and secondary education. It has a thriving local primary school, Horrabridge Community Primary School, which is housed in a new building that opened in 1992.

In terms of secondary education, Horrabridge is just three miles from the popular and respected Tavistock Community College. Pupils from the village benefit from a free shuttle-bus service to and from the school. The college is one of the largest schools in the county with over 1,800 pupils, 400 of which are in the sixth form. The College has a good reputation for academic achievements with students of all abilities.

For children with learning difficulties, Chelfham school, near Tavistock is close at hand.
