Corsham is an historic market town in northwest Wiltshire. Situated at the southwest corner of the Cotswolds, it is well located between Bath and Chippenham and has a population of around 12,000.

Other neighbouring villages and market towns include Biddestone, Colerne, Box, Atworth, and Lackock.

History of Corsham

Corsham used to be well-known as a centre for agriculture, later the wool industry and nowadays remains key to quarrying Bath Stone.  The town has numerous historic buildings, such as the stately home of Corsham Court. In World War II and the Cold War, it became a major administrative and manufacturing centre for the Ministry of Defence, with numerous establishments both above ground and in the old quarry tunnels.

Interestingly up until 1999, Corsham never had a town charter as it was officially a village. The parish council then took advantage of the right (given to English parishes in 1972) to rename itself to Corsham town council.

Although it does not have a local railway station, this closed in the 1960s, local services call at nearby stations such as Melksham (about 4.5 miles away) and Chippenham (just over 4.5 miles away).
