Biggin Hill, in the Borough of Bromley, is best known for its airport which was once an RAF airfield and which played a crucial part in both World Wars, in particular during the Battle of Britain in WWII. It is situated about 8 miles south of Bromley on road to Westerham.
History of Biggin Hill
The area now called Biggin Hill was historically in the parish of Cudham, which is currently a small village two miles to the east. It was based on the manor of Codeham and in 1215 was divided into three parts, the manors of Apuldre, Bertray and Cowdham. Modern day Biggin Hill is contained mostly within the areas of Apuldre and Bertray.
By 1900 Biggin Hill was a small community of approximately 500 people clustered by the side of the Westerham Road and based around the junction with Jail Lane. It was surrounded entirely by farmland including that of Biggin Hill Farm itself, after which the town was named. Some of the roads in which the properties at the Biggin Hill estate are situated are named after the Battle of Britain war hero Sir Keith Park.
Transport in Biggin Hill
Biggin Hill is situated on the A233, and is a good commuter location for central London, less than 20 miles and an hour’s journey away. Trains run from nearby Orpington to London Charing Cross station several times an hour with a journey time of approximately half an hour.
The airport is now known as London Biggin Hill Airport which is mainly used by private small aircraft and helicopters.
Education in Biggin Hill
There are 76 primary schools in the Borough of Bromley: 55 are community schools, 11 are voluntary aided, five are foundation, five are voluntary controlled and 16 are faith schools. There are 17 secondary schools.
There are four special schools, 18 additionally resourced mainstream primary schools and four additionally resourced mainstream secondary schools in the borough for pupils with special educational needs.
